I think this book will be very helpful and a major
supplement while taking this class. The introduction itself offered great
insight as to how it will benefit me as a reader. I like that the first thing
it mentions is brainstorming, for that is where most good ideas come from.
Also, I liked that the author talks about talent being mysterious and abstract,
but being creative is something that can be improved by implementing a new
process and trying new things. Lastly on the introduction, it was nice to have someone
say that design can be messy and not always successful.
The section on the design process was neat to see set out in
a sort of info graphic way. The diagram was both aesthetically pleasing and
informational. I like how we are given an actual example on how these things
worked for the homelessness campaign. The section on interviewing was a new
piece of information because as a student, I don’t have to go through this
process. The rest of the section was helpful because it showed how much work
and elimination goes into the final product. Even ridiculous ideas were
examined but then thrown out.

I also found the examples that were given after the introduction to each method very helpful as well. Not only did the author give us easy to understand steps to follow, but provided a real-life example that showed us how the tactic could be used in the design world. Additionally, in an example that included a poster, I found when the author dissected the composition and explained the function of each element to be beneficial in increasing my overall understanding of the text.
ReplyDeleteOverall, Lupton's book does a fantastic job of dissecting nearly every aspect of the design process to make it easier to understand - which is probably why it seems so user-friendly. Also, the approach taken when breaking-down each step in the design process is typically paralleled by visuals that (at least in my mind) trigger an understanding that may or may not have been accomplished in standard textbook form.
ReplyDeleteThere are some great points made above me and I wholeheartedly agree with all of them. Overall, I think Lupton does a fantastic job piecing together all the information she presented. There's a straightforward structure of definition, real world advice, and company case studies - which makes the reading predictable and that's in no way a bad thing. It's actually a great thing, as the content is always informative -from the broadest definition, narrowing down to the smallest tidbits of advice. The predictability of the content structure is what I think makes this book so useful, because even years from now I can go back and easily reference any part of Lupton's design process and find it easily.
