Jorgenson, #1

Firstly, I was quite surprised at the density of the book while simply flipping through it before I had began reading. Like other design books, it is graphically appealing & diverse in that the layouts throughout vary in organization but maintain a "trendy" look to them. Each of the sections provides the reader with visual examples & explanations of how/why things pertaining to design work the way they work (i.e. visual puns). But after delving into the content, the reader is presented with helpful examples to trigger the actual design process - NOT subjective ideas as some design books do. Ellen Lupton has sufficiently broken-down the process of potentially any design project into clear sections, such as brainstorming and mind mapping. It made sense in my head because if one is able to efficiently grasp these preliminary steps that eventually converge into a design project, the growth of an up-and-coming designer is underway.

  1. I definitely agree. Even just within the first section, she covers at least nine methods of how to brainstorm. The different layouts and visuals also engaged me. It would be different if she ONLY explained how to do them, but she SHOWED us as well. After reading "Design Writing Research" by Ellen Lupton and J. Abbot Miller, I found the reading and the book similar in that way. The reading talks about how Marshall McLuhan and Quentin Fiore strayed away from traditional, cookie-cutter methods. In my opinion, when the pages and layouts change, it forces people to stay engaged because they are eager to see what comes next. If you turn to a few random pages in the book, no two layouts are identical.

  2. I’m happy that this book did not focus on subjective act ideas like other design books often do. I was also a little surprised by the length of the book as well but it looks like the book has some good information and ideas in it that can be used for the next project.

  3. I'm deffinately in agreement with the other comments about how it's good that the book lets you come up with your own ideas about how to design and just suggests ideas for how to come up with your ideas. It's important that designers keep their sence of individuality.
