Emily Ryan - Reading 2

Chapter 2

I found chapter 2 to be extremely eye opening, helpful, and reassuring. For a while I thought of my own creative process as kind of odd, but it was really nice to see a lot of what I had been already doing is described in the book. It also opened my eyes to a much broader range of ideas, on how to get ideas!

The first topic the book discusses is the method of brain dumping. This is something I do but not like the book talks about. I don’t sketch but I think of all the options and discard them. I think I will start sketching; at least it will be a good way to keep track of ideas I’ve already had. I have never really tried using the forced connections method, at least consciously, and I think it is a really fun and great idea to stretch the limits. I think I would really enjoy doing a project based on that. I really thought the case study about the multipurpose tools was awesomely creative and witty. By attributing different action verbs to ideas was another topic the book was talking about, which I also thought really created some great ideas as well that stretched the boundaries.

The best advice this book has given me so far I think is the bit about being a sponge. Inspiration can come from anywhere and it’s important to be open to it!

Currently I am also taking a class on semiotics, and so it was very refreshing to learn about it in a different way. In my opinion, I understood how this book talked about it as opposed to my other one, but I got the message either way.

This book is awesome because it is really showing me things I never really thought about, but kind of knew I would inevitably have to do, such as collaborating and co-designing. I am grateful this book began to discuss it and gave examples of how it can be very successful. It also gives great advice on how to make your work able to be translated to other languages and demographics.

Overall this was a really informative chapter, and I will definitely be keeping this book for the future.

  1. I also said on my post that being a sponge was the best advice. It really stuck to me because you can find inspiration anywhere in the world if you keep your eyes open for inspirations.

  2. I like to get my inspiration from lots of places, whether it's from magazines, blogs, Pinterest, Designspiration, walking down the street, etc. While I don't always "keep my eyes open for inspirations", I have found that looking at these different things have helped me with my designs.
