Julia Simplicio - Reading 1

After this reading, I noticed how this book will always be helpful in my design career. I can see myself going back to it in order to explore different strategies that I could go about while making design. I was very pleased with the way that the author explains each section by beginning with the definition, how to go about achieving a task, and finally with real world examples.

There were many suggestions on dealing with a design problem in the first part of the book. I can remember a few that stuck to me, but not all of them. That is why I find it very cool that I can go back to the book and read the straight forward definitions and how-to lists. The author did not drag, and was to the point, which is something that I highly appreciate. It was the first time that I read many different design ideas listed in a concise manner.

The real life examples were an added bonus, in my opinion. They helped me understand how certain designers approached a task, and how they ended up going about it. Having these real examples are great because I end up not being left only with directions on how to deal with something, I actually get to see how someone dealt with it in real life.

  1. I also liked how there were straight forward definitions of how to solve issues. Talking about problem solving is one thing, but for the author to actually display an image of how they would go about solving an issue was a lot of help. It seems as if this design book was made specifically for students about to enter the work environment, because of the easy to read and well organized manner it is presented in. It would be bad advertising to write a design book that was not designed effectively.

With so many different approaches to solve a problem, I know that it will be beneficial to be able to look back at it when faced with a design issue. In addition, I agree that the real life examples made the book more relatable.

  3. I never had even thought of the possibility of going back to this book later in my career as a tool. Being in school currently I had just thought of the bonuses to owing this book, and taking the correlating class. But After I Read your post, I realized how incredible of an idea it is to be able to use this book as a call back, after school. The book is very welcoming and easy to read, so I absolutely agree that this book is and would be an excellent to to use in the field, after school.

  4. I agree, the real life situations are very helpful and make this book more engaging. The case studies also make it helpful to determine which brainstorming method best fits a clients need. The brainstorming methods can definitely be applied to other situations, such as creating concepts for ad campaigns, or gathering data which pertains more to my major.
