Dating Strategy Analysis
For my dating strategy project I made four digital projection pieces describing my dating type. I used quotes directly from my friends about what kind of people I tend to like. I used many of the same elements throughout the pieces. highlighted one item on each piece with an additional shape in the background.
The specific subject is an abstract, navy man with a large, rounded nose. The secondary subject is a teal background shape. In the first one, the secondary subject is the male gender symbol, an arrow pointed to the north-east direction. In the second piece, it is the rounded figure of a man that is shown on bathroom doors to indicate the men’s room. The third is a painted light bulb with streaks surrounding the top and the fourth is two left feet. The secondary subjects add to the compositions. I want the meaning to be reflected again behind the main figure.
The unifying elements are the consistency of color, form, and text. On all pieces, there is the figure with a large nose, some border, a teal secondary background image, centered text and one item highlighted in a lighter blue. The first piece has the same border as the last piece to close the pieces like a book. I would say my pieces are mainly geometric, but pushing deconstructive. They are geometric because of the minimalist elements and the single narrative. The deconstructive aspect comes in due to the overlapping layers and shapes. In the second piece, I included a bunch of colored dots because I thought they were “awkward” and added to the piece. Also on the second piece, I added a funky border that is made up of half circles, straight lines, and outlines. I also colored in the dots and the border with all of the colors used in the piece. The second piece is probably the most deconstructive of the three. In a way, they could also be integrative because I want viewers to stare at the main subject and then go in and out with the background teal subject. My pieces are mainly geometric because of the simplicity and cleanness.
As far as the context of the piece, these show my personality because of the vibe and the quirkiness. I would consider myself awkward and nerdy, two of the main adjectives used in the second and third pieces. The first piece actually even says my name. All of these quotes my best friends actually said about my type. They were side by side with me as I was working on them. My work is similar to my classmates because some pieces use slight variations of colors and some students did multiple pieces as well. I wanted to keep my project simplified with text and an image. My friends are my biggest inspiration for these pieces.
My purpose is to inform people about my dating type. In a way, I want viewers to have a little peak into my dating world. I want them to imagine the type of people I would like based on the inferences from the pieces. For example, someone could think about an awkward boy who has acne on his nose while looking at the second piece because some of the dots are on the tip of the long nose. The shape of the nose may even resemble a penis. I want the viewers to enjoy the pieces and to feel happy and imaginative while viewing them. These pieces were meant to be light and comical.
I would say my final project is successful because of the unity. All of the elements work well together. One strength of the project is the consistency. I like the teal images behind the main subject in all of them. That, the background, and the text are the only elements that change from piece to piece. Other than that, I keep the same color scheme and position. All of the pieces could work on their own, but together they have a larger story. A weakness may be the oversimplification of some elements. A more complex figure may have a bigger impact. Another weakness may be the limited color palette. Maybe the highlighted images (the nose, the bow tie, the glasses, and the eyes) could have been red. Overall, I really enjoyed creating and working on this project. It was a funny way to express something personal about myself. One day I’ll find my awkward nerd!
