When starting this out, I had no idea what direction I
wanted to go with this piece. People have picked on me because of my race, but
I really did not want to focus too much on that aspect. I wanted to celebrate
the fact that I was happy to be an American and Hong Konger. I finally opted to
focus on the importance of both cultures and how it has come to define me
throughout these years. Originally I had a mash-up of images and fonts for my
rough piece, combining self-important aspects of both sides of the cultural
fence.
This produced an image that was conflicted and
obtrusive. So I went back to
brainstorming with feedback in mind. I decided to get rid of many of the
images, mainly because of the visual inconsistencies presented. I made use of
only unedited still shots to promote consistency in style. I also made use of a
better font pairing, using Letter Gothic for secondary text and Stiff Staff, a
modern type, for primary text. At first, I wanted to create a deconstructive/
integrative piece, but after the first critique I created a geometric piece
instead.
Finishing this up was interesting. Since there was so much
imagery in the first rough that it made it somewhat conflicting, I decided to
keep the objects in the piece to a minimum. I used the lantern and the beer
bottles to overall represent each cultural side. The secondary text presents
words that I find to be crucial to both sides of my life. With the primary text
leading through a narration of how I view being born to one place and living in
another. The circles that contain the images of the two cities also help to
represent the encapsulation of each culture, but by overlapping the circles
this reflects the melding and crossing of the two cultures. On the other hand,
the lines throughout the piece represent separation, showing that while these
cultures overlap to me; they might not in other situations.
